In a major bowls upset the Sunraysia Champion of Champions singles event was contested by two rank outsiders at the Mildura Workers rinks on Sunday.
The final was held between David Gray of Merbein and Roger Wattison of Wentworth.
They had both shocked bowls officials by beating in the semi finals the more fancied finalists in Michael Legin of Mildura Workers and Chris Mitchell of Mildura Bowls Club.
Legin appeared uneasy in the blustery conditions, going down to David Gray 15 to 25 in the semi final.
The other semi final was a topsy-turvey affair with Wattison leading Mitchell 18 to 3 at one stage.
But Mitchell back to make it 19 to 18 and the pair became locked into some tense bowls in which the lead changed several times.
Mitchell had the advantage of three shots before Wattison, with his last bowl, arrested a shot from Mitchell, who looked like getting the three shots until then.
This gave Wattison a win 25 to 24 and the right to play Gray in the final.
Gray, who is having a good season for Merbein, took out his first district title by winning 25 to 17 and earning the right to represent Sunraysia in the Group final in March.
