Mildura is on track to host the 2012 UIM World Circuit Powerboat Championships thanks to a $15,000 funding boost announced Saturday from the Victorian Government’s Significant Sporting Events Program.
Joining the Member for Mildura Peter Crisp in making the announcement, the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty said the funding boost was a great win for Mildura and would help increase the profile of the district as an events hub.
“Sport plays a vital role in regional Victorian communities, especially here in Mildura and that’s why the Victorian Government continues to invest to attract the best events to regional Victoria,” Mr Delahunty said.
“This boost provides the perfect opportunity for Mildura to showcase its capacity to host wider region to even more people by making the 2012 UIM World Circuit Powerboat Championships the best ever.
“The Powerboat Championships, to be held between May 11-13 this year at Mildura Ski Club, are expected to attract a large amount of entries from across Australia featuring current unlimited world champion Troy Marland,” Mr Delahunty said.
Mr Delahunty said events like the Powerboat Championships formed part of Victoria’s sporting events strategy, attracted visitors to Victoria, provided a stimulus for the economy and boosted sports participation at a local level.
“Through initiatives like the Significant Sporting Events Program we can work together to develop and support a wide range of events like the Powerboat Championships that help keep Victoria in the national and international spotlight,” Mr Delahunty said.
Mr Delahunty said Fastwater Promotions was one of nine event organisers or councils to receive funding in the latest round of Significant Sporting Events Program.
