Red Cliffs Football Club senior coach Matt Walder has resigned his position.

Walder put forward his resignation after meeting with members of the Red Cliffs Football Club executive on Friday afternoon.

The Club said Sunday that Walder had not been sacked but had resigned the position because he felt that the Club was not going in the direction he would like it be heading.

Walder confirmed Sunday that he had resigned as coach but said he would not be making any comment on the matter until an official statement was released from the Red Cliffs Football Club.

“I want to see that statement before I respond,” Walder said.

“I understand a statement will be issued on Monday and I will then talk to the media, probably on Monday afternoon.”

Sources indicated that it will not be the end of Matt Walder’s football career and that he was looking at options but would spend a couple of days out of the limelight assessing what he intends to do.

Football Club sources also indicated that the split had been amicable and that the executive had wished Walder well in his future football.

They said that while the reasons for Walder resigning were unclear, there was no animosity between the Club and Walder himself.

Club sources did indicate that player recruitment would be difficult this year and this follows on statements from Wentworth that so far the premiership team had no 2010 recruits so far, had lost five and would rely on bringing up juniors.

The Tigers will secure the return of some former players but are embroiled in several battles to retain some juniors and younger fringe players who have been targeted by several Millewa League Clubs.

But sources said there were no qualms about releasing older players who had given great service over many years with Ash Pullman and Marcus Kampff both heading for the Gol Gol Hawks this season.

Walder had been originally been appointed coach for two seasons and had been  appointed for a third year late last season.

The Tigers will now have to find a new coach for the 2010 season.
