A total 23 people were arrested by Mildura Police on New Years Eve, 15 of them for drinking offences.

Police issued at least 15 penalty notices, including six to women, for drinking offences which will result in a fine of $240 each.

The crackdown and the issue of penalty notices results from new State Government legislation, allowing Police to fine drunks, as well as lock them up.

On New Years Eve two drivers were charged with driving over the limit, one of whom was a 19 year old local who was intercepted by a Traffic Management Unit member in Karadoc Avenue at about 3.30am.

Two Mildura persons – a man and a woman – have been charged and released on bail following an incident in the Vineland Motel in Deakin Avenue.

Police said that the pair had smashed glasses and mirrors in the unit with the male person arrested about 9.30pm on New Years Eve.

Damage to the motel unit was in the vicinity of $300.

Another person was charged with criminal damage following a city incident while at Red Cliffs a male person was arrested for breach of the peace.

The incident resulted from Police attendance at a wild party in Douglas Avenue, Red Cliffs.

When police went to investigate the noisy party at around 1am they were set upon and the police van had its rear window smashed.
